The “Garbage Patch” – Massive Collection of Plastic Pollution in the Ocean

The North Pacific Tropical Gyre also known as the Garbage Patch – seven millions tons of floating plastic waste spanning an area twice the size of Texas. There is six times as much plastic in the gyre than there is plankton. Plankton is the area’s most abundant food source. Animals mistake this waste for food dying either from plastic poisoning or blockage of their digestive system. This plastic absorbs, transports, and releases hydrophobic pollutants (PCB,DDE,DDT) not only harming the oceans food chain, but us as well. Diseases, infertility, etc. Plastic is 100% nonbiodegradable. Reduce your plastic waste.

City of Chicago Vows To Fight Indiana Oil Refinery Dumping Plan

Is it not just unfathomable that an entire area, densely populated, has to beg a greedy few to not increase pollution and dumping into their natural water source?
Even worse, this is just one of many current stories of environmental negligence by a corporation. As these proponents of big oil fluff and spin a heartless justification and trivialization of why their company growth is more important than their costumers health and well being, I am thinking to myself “how can these people look another human being in the eye and not blush blood red?”

Your State’s Carbon Footprint Rating

I recently received an email containing a link that I feel is very relevant and worth sharing.Eredux.com, on the surface, has an interactive map that shows your state’s carbon score along with carbon emissions per person. But, for detailed demographic data and information on energy consumption, carbon emissions in your area, contamination levels, local gas prices and so forth just click on a state and fill in your zip code.

Do NOT Just Throw Away Those Compact Fluorescent Bulbs

I was browsing the mainstream news channels and came across a report on compact fluorescent bulbs containing mercury. And although I was aware of that, to listen to the journalist explain it would have you immediately switch back to the less efficient incandescent bulbs. Even companies marketing CF bulbs were targeted by the fearful report as if they were part of a conspiracy to fill the world with mercury.
