Magnetism at Mecca

Saudi artist Ahmed Mater talks about his work involving magnetism, mirage and Mecca. Ahmed Mater: Chronicles is happening at Christie’s headquarters situated within the coronary heart of St. James’s, London, from July 17 to August 22.

Curated by Dr. Ridha Moumni, Chairman, Christie’s Middle East and Africa and organised thematically, the exhibition will hint Ahmed Mater’s expansive profession, from his first inventive experiments to his newest tasks.

As an acclaimed multimedia artist working throughout mediums together with images, movies, work, sculptures and installations, the exhibition will illustrate Mater’s distinctive visible reflections on the transformations throughout the social and religious landscapes of Saudi Arabia, and the Arab World.

Ahmed Mater: Chronicles will hint his inventive genesis from experimental forays throughout medical college, his adolescence within the Al-Meftaha Arts Village, and his involvement in enriching the Kingdom’s modern artwork scene with Edge of Arabia, to the laboratory of concepts and collaborations that his present studio represents.

The Christie exhibition will spotlight Mater’s seminal works, which embody early-career summary work, the Illumination sequence, the celebrated Desert of Pharan photography project (featured beneath) and also will unveil his most up-to-date work, together with Magnetism Book.

Drawing on themes of mutation, modernisation, land, and religion, the artworks included in Ahmed Mater: Chronicles shall be on mortgage from prestigious establishments within the Middle East, from necessary non-public collections, and from the artist’s studio.

Some of his themes contain nomadism, desert dwellings and the shifting sands of Saudi Arabia. The exhibit will even characteristic Mater’s upcoming AlUla exhibition.
