Being concerned about the environment often extends to every part of your life. It’s easy to start looking at everything through a “green” lens and think “how can I make this better for the environment?”, so why not extend that to your sex life too!

Look, we’ve done a bit of research and in the end, safe sex still requires a bit of waste. There’s just no real way to get around that and we definitely advise putting safe sex over your mission to create less waste. But the good news is, there are some ways you can have MORE sustainable safe sex- yay!

So let’s talk about one of the most essential items for safe sex – condoms.

We know there are a multitude of different contraception options to choose from, everything from the IUD to the pill, however for both contraception and std protection your best bet is often still the condom or dental dam, so we thought we’d focus on that one.

Not all condom companies are created equally. The good news is that 100% latex condoms are “a sustainable resource. Latex is the sap of rubber trees. So you are starting with a pretty sustainable product because, unlike a lot of other products that come from trees, you are not harming the tree in any way“, according to Founder of Sustain Condoms in an interview with Lauren Singer.

So, that’s good news, right? At least we know the method of obtaining the resource itself is not harmful on the planet. But remember, this only applies to condoms without any additives and a lot of condom companies are not transparent about those additives. So, the best thing you can do is to make sure you’re consciously choosing the condoms you buy.

There are condom brands that are more sustainable than others, so let’s delve into the ones that are better for our planet. Look for Fair Trade, 100% latex, vegan-friendly, paraben-free, GMO- free and nitrosamine-free condoms – they’ll be better for you too! Also look for companies that do work to help the community for example, some companies have a buy one give one program that donates condoms to countries where they aren’t readily available.

Here’s a list of condom companies we’ve found:

Sustainability is a lifestyle and whilst there are definitely some things we haven’t figured out yet, there’s always a more sustainable and ethical option out there. Sometimes it just takes a little bit of investigating and asking the right questions!

Let us know in the comments if you know of any other sustainable and ethical condom companies!
